Our Past
The Delta Theta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 23, 1973 under the leadership of then Southeastern Region Syntaktes Mary R. Brooks. Endorsed by the Beta Kappa Sigma Chapter of Tampa, the Chapter was initially instituted to meet the needs of the Sorority’s members who after graduating from college had relocated back to Lake County.
Led by Soror Lynette Pennington, the Chapter’s inaugural intake class included the following members:
Ethel Bailey (Bethune Cookman, BS 1970)
Alicia Fleming Brown (FAMU, BS)
Mattie Frances Bryant (FAMU, BS 1968)
Julia E. Cato (Florida Memorial, BS 1947)
Doris B. Daniels (BCC, 1947)
Ollie M. Juce (FAMU, 1948)
Elizabeth A. Hartsfield (FAMU, 1951)

Our Present
Led by Soror Stephanie J. Brinkley, Esq. members of the Sorority pursued reactivation in 2024. In 2026, the Chapter's reacivation was approved by Syntaktes Tanya Judge.
A taskforce was assembled to uncover the Chapter's history and determine the best way forward for the group. It was decided that the Chapter would remain based in Leesburg, FL with a focus on primarily serving Lake, Sumter, Osceola and Seminole Counties. Although these communities would serve as the hubs and focus areas for the Chapter, it was also decided the the Chapter would be a FULLY HYBRID Chapter - the first of its kind in Sigma. This methodolgy ensures members will be fully engaged no matter where they are located in the world.
Focused on the capstone areas of TRANSPARENCY, INNOVATION, EFFICIENCY & SISTERHOOD, the Chapter's foundational principles are as follows:
We are a group of highly skilled, highly educated women – colorful, confident and committed to excellence.
We recognize the dedication, selflessness and painstaking efforts of our Founders, without which we would not exist.
We consistently aspire to greatness in every endeavor – big or small.
We realize that diversity of thoughts and experiences make us richer.
As such…
We respect and love one another despite our differences.
We are committed to uplifting, advancing and supporting one another, as well as the many partners who invest in our sisterhood.
We remain focused on education at every level for all people,
and hold education as the foundational principle upon which we stand.
In alignment with the greater sisterhood, our motto is and will always be
“Greater Service, Greater Progress.”
